Knuckles Day Excursion
Knuckles Range - Dawatagala
The Knuckles Mountain Range lies in central Sri Lanka, in the Districts of Matale and Kandy. The range takes its name from a series of recumbent folds and peaks in the west of the massif which resemble the knuckles of clenched fist when viewed from certain locations in the Kandy District.
Since this is a day tour the journey begins by leaving from Kandy town at 7 in the morning. The trekking process starts from the Knuckles western slope through Bambarella. There are approximately 8km from the starting point and the second peak. A small waterfall could be found on the way with many water streams.
More than 34% of Sri Lanka’s endemic trees, shrubs, and herbs are only found in these forests. The weather in Knuckles range is very unpredictable and undergoes frequent changes and the probability of the peaks being covered with mist is relatively high. In the rainy season it is advised to be ready for leaches.
The trekking is an uphill climb usually taking around 6 hours to climb up and come back. There is an alternate route to reach the summit which starts from Thangappuwa.
